Gaming Memories: About this Series

I’ve always told my wife that I mark the years and events of my life with video games — that’s not entirely true, but they definitely are a substantial part of my life. My family was never one for big or overly memorable vacations, and I’ve always loved technology, so it was only natural that games became an enormous part of my life.

As such, my intention is to publish bite-sized pieces that cover my experience with a variety of games throughout my life. While there may be a bit of a review element to each piece, my intent is instead to talk about the feelings and experiences around the game. It’s been my observation that our memories are highly colored by the time period during which we have them. My aim, in publishing these, are threefold:

  • Foremost, to serve as a journal of sorts for some of the meaningful memories in my life that are wrapped up in digital escapism
  • Seeking kinship in others who have similar experiences
  • Sharing what made these moments special in hopes of inspiring others to reflect on the magic their own experiences

I firmly believe that video games are a transformative media, even more special than books or movies, because they are experiences which can be collaborative — sometimes multiplayer, sometimes venturing through something with a friend or family member side-by-side, other times disparate experiences of the same game that you can later talk about. Each player walks away with a different experience that can be formative in their own way, and as a result, each with a story to tell; these, are my stories.
